Putiputi O’Brien was NZ’s first Māori nurse. She trained at Waikato Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 to 1945 as a general and obstetric nurse, and worked in the Midlands region all her life. She died this week aged 93 years. Hundreds gathered at Ruaihona Marae in the Bay of Plenty to farewell her.
