Headline: Annual report on mental health treatment released

The eighth annual report by the Office of the Director of Mental Health has been released today by the Ministry of Health.

The annual report is part of the Office’s accountability to the sector and is always of great interest to many people involved in mental health care including mental health service users and their families, those who work in the sector, and advocacy groups.

The report provides a record of the work the Office does and reports on some of the activities of the Office’s legally-assigned officers.

Each year the annual report aims to publish a growing range of indicators in various areas of mental health treatment.

The 2012 annual report includes information about compulsory assessment and treatment, electroconvulsive therapy, seclusion, and suicide.

As in previous years, it is important to note the report does not attempt to interpret data variations between district health boards, as these could be due to a number of variables, including clinical practice, size, location, population and service configuration.

For further information about the statistics relating to a specific district health board, please refer directly to that district health board.

The Director of Mental Health, Dr John Crawshaw, is available to speak on the report.
