The Clyde Wade Award
This year’s prestigious Clyde Wade award has gone to respiratory specialist Dr Zaheerodin Bhikoo for his excellence in clinical teaching.
The award is now in its second year and there were 30 physicians nominated across the Waikato DHB. 19 received either merit or commended certificates.
After retiring, Dr Wade decided to create an award that would recognize excellence in clinical teaching by physicians in adult medicine.
Dr Bhikoo was honoured by his peers for his wide breath of knowledge and clinical teaching skills with his supportive and enthusiastic style, and approachable nature on all matters.
“For each of us as clinicians, the words, practises and behaviours of our best clinical teachers are the things that resonate through the length of our careers” said Dr Clyde Wade.
“Clinical teaching is a key element in ensuring a high standard of our practise for our patients, our pupils, our teachers and the institution in which we practise, and which Dr Bhikoo represents.”
Dr Paul Huggan, director of physician education at Waikato DHB introduced proceedings stating that teaching in health lies at the core of everything we do.
“In this job we’re going nowhere if we’re not teaching and learning. So this award supports the core of our work and our Waikato DHB vision that aims to be a centre of excellence in learning, training, research and innovation.”
As Waikato grows to be recognised as a mecca for science and education Waikato DHB continues to grow with initiatives including the Clyde Wade award, and the proposal for a third Waikato medical.
Dr Jonathan Christiansen, president of the New Zealand Royal Australasian College of Physicians holds training in the highest standard to ensure the best healthcare is delivered.
Dr Christiansen also recognised and commended Waikato DHB’s 2017 senior registers: Dr Katherine Walland, Dr Eskandarain Shafuddin and Dr Roshan Rebello.
More about the Clyde Wade Award
Clyde commissioned Whare Heke, a Tauranga artist and carver, to design a trophy based on a deer antler from Clyde’s deer farm. The deer antler is carved into a stylised koru (representing growth and new beginnings) and sits on a wooden base of pohutukawa from Ohiwa Harbour in the Bay of Plenty.
The award consists of the trophy (which is passed on each year), a certificate and a plaque listing the recipients’ names which will be kept in Medicine. All nominees received certificates.
