Headline: Keep kiwi kids safe this Labour weekend
Plunket is encouraging New Zealand families to think about their kids’ safety this Labour weekend.
Plunket National Advisor on Child Safety, Sue Campbell says “The long weekend is all about fun, family, friends and hopefully some sunshine. But it’s also a time when accidents are all too common, particularly on our roads.”
“This long weekend remember everyone has to be properly buckled up. Car crashes are one of the biggest dangers to New Zealand children. The simple truth is that car seats save lives” she says.
Research tells us that children are far more likely to survive a car crash if correctly buckled into a car seat or booster seat, for every trip. Ensuring children and adults are restrained is the best protection.
Over the holiday weekend children are often travelling with different family or friends so it’s important their car seats travel with them.
If you are unsure about your child’s car seat installation, or if you need to hire an additional car seat for visiting children over Labour weekend, Plunket recommends getting expert assistance from a child restraint technician. You can find a child restraint technician near you on the NZ Transport Agency website.
“It is also important to be conscious of child safety before you start the car. Driveway runover accidents occur when young children aren’t visible to the driver, always know where the kids are before getting in the car, check and check again for children before driving off” says Sue Campbell.
“For many of us Labour weekend is all about spending time with family, so this is just a timely reminder to keep our loved ones and little ones safe on and around the road” says Sue.
