Whakakotahi 2019 shortlist announced

10 Dec 2018 | Primary Care

The shortlist of projects for the third round of Whakakotahi, the Commission’s initiative to develop quality improvement capability in primary care, has been announced.

Primary care providers were recently invited to apply for Whakakotahi 2019. Of the 23 applications received, 15 have been shortlisted to go through to the next stage.

Dr John Wellingham, chair of the Commission’s primary care expert advisory group, says it’s encouraging to see the range of primary care providers interested in being part of Whakakotahi 2019.

‘This year we had even more Māori health organisations and pharmacies applying, along with general practice, primary health organisations (PHOs) and non-government organisations (NGOs). I am pleased there is such a strong interest in primary care quality improvement.’

Applications for Whakakotahi must support the Commission’s three primary care strategic priority areas of equity, consumer engagement and integration.

Dr Wellingham says this round will see an increased focus on equity.

‘The primary care programme team is working with Te Tihi, who are supporting our engagement with Māori health organisations and providing advice on achieving equity in the primary care sector.

‘We’re also working with PHARMAC to introduce a specific focus on addressing inequities in access to medicines. Three of the final improvement projects will have this focus.

‘We thank all teams for taking the time and effort to apply. We’re now working with the shortlisted teams to refine their proposals.’

The revised proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel in December. The panel will select a maximum of 12 projects to go through to the improvement phase, which will start in the new year.

The 15 shortlisted Whakakotahi 2019 projects are:
