An article on the Stuff website today reported about the effectiveness of morning-after pill for heavier women.
Much of the information in this article, originally from the Sydney Morning Herald, is not accurate in a New Zealand context.
In New Zealand it is called the Emergency Contraception Pill, or ECP, and is provided as Postinor.
Our National Medical Advisor, Dr Christine Roke, says there is now information that the emergency contraceptive pill may not work for heavier women. But she says there are other options.
“For women who weigh more than 75kg, a copper IUD put in within a few days is an effective option,” Dr Roke says.
“It is important that women who are heavier discuss their options with a doctor or nurse as soon as possible to decide what would be best for them.”
“This is particularly important if a woman has had unprotected intercourse just before she was due to ovulate or missed a contraceptive pill in the first week of her hormone pills.”
At a Family Planning clinic the Copper IUD is a low or no cost option.
