Infection control nurses are out in force this week (24 October) promoting their cause for good infection prevention and control at our hospitals and health services.
Activities for Infection and Prevention Control week include display board competitions for the clinical areas with the theme, Infection Prevention: Staying ahead of the game. All clinical areas are able to enter into the competition. Link to our Facebook page to see the displays (external link) .
Infection control clinical nurse specialist Siew Ling Ong is always heartened by the effort staff go to with the display board competitions.
“The enthusiasm of the staff to get involved is a highlight for me” said Siew Ling
“We have had a very busy year but they still go out of their way, even in their own time to participate and come up with very creative displays”
There are also quizzes, word find competitions and a large display near the cafeteria entrance at Waikato Hospital for both staff and public.
Judging has started and it is going to be hard to pick the winners. Prizes are medical book vouchers valued at $100 and $150. Results of the winning boards will be known next week.
A big thanks from Infection Prevention and Control team to those who have taken the time to enter into the competition.
The Infection Prevention and Control team; acknowledge that Ebola has made staff more aware of infection control. Staff are asking ‘What are we going to do and how are we going to protect ourselves.’ It makes passing out the infection prevention messages easy and people seem to engage with the protocols more.

However, we still have daily infection prevention and control activities that are as important that staff need to be aware of. If staff don’t follow the processes properly they may hurt another patient or themselves.
