Headline: Thousands of South Canterbury people refused specialist treatment over 5 years
People are being turned away by specialists as they are not considered bad enough to meet the criteria for an operation in South Canterbury. More than 500 people referred to specialists in South Canterbury were told their ailments were not considered severe enough for surgery in 2014. The South Canterbury District Health Board’s (SCDHB) First Specialist Assessment (FSA) figures were revealed under an Official Information Act request. They show the number of people returned to their General Practitioners (GP) after an FSA refusal has increased since 2010, but what they do not show is how many were referred in total each year.
