Headline: Surgeries cancelled at Southland Hospital
A significant number of non-urgent surgeries have been cancelled at Southland Hospital in recent weeks because there were no spare beds for the patients to sleep in afterwards. Southern District Health Board acting chief medical officer Dick Bunton said the winter months resulted in higher numbers of elderly people being hospitalised with chest infections and respiratory problems which contributed to the hospital beds being filled up.
